Lime is used in horse paddocks to raise soil pH (reduce soil acidity).  It is an essential nutrient, used to improve grass growth and support healthy pasture for horses. Soil tests are best way  to determine if liming is needed, as the ideal pH level for a paddock is 6.0.  Agricultural lime, which is safe for grazing animals, is applied with a spreader at any time of year, though it is best to keep horses off the treated area until after rain, or a heavy dew.

Why lime paddocks?

  • Balances Soil pH:

Soil can become too acidic, slowing grass growth. Liming neutralises acidity, helping to achieve an ideal pH of 6.0.

  • Boosts Grass Growth:

At the right pH, essential nutrients are in place for the grass, leading to a more vigorous and healthier pasture.

  • Discourages Weeds:

Some weeds thrive in acidic soil, so liming can help improve the quality of the turf.

How to use lime in a horse paddock

  1. Soil Testing:

We can test your soil to check the current pH level. This is the most reliable way to know if and how much lime is needed. We then send the sample away to our agronomist to determine how much lime is required.

  2. Apply Agricultural Lime:

We use an agricultural lime product. We never use hydrated or building lime, as it can be too caustic and will burn the grass.

  3. Use a Spreader:

We apply the lime using a large spinner on the back of our tractor, giving a wide even spread. If only a very small area, we will use a push spreader.

  4. Timing is Key:

You can apply lime any time of year. However, applying it during periods of rain will help the lime break down faster.

  5. Keep Horses Off After Application:

Wait until after a rain shower to allow the lime dust to be washed off the grass before allowing your horses back into the treated field. This prevents potential respiratory issues from the dust.

Benefits of well-managed paddocks

  • Improved Soil Health: Lime encourages the activity of soil bacteria and earthworms.

  • Better Nutrition Value: Liming helps make more nutrients available for plant roots.

  • Overall Plant Vitality: A healthy soil environment leads to stronger grass and a more robust pasture for your horses.
